Khajuraho temples are world famous for the artwork, sculptures that have been carved on the temple. Out of all the artwork, 10% is erotic artwork which intrigues people from around the world. Remaining 90% artwork is about day to day life of ancient Indian culture.
There are Hindu and Jain temple group that remains now. Total around 20 temples remains out of 85 temples constructed in and around 10 AD.
These temples structure is so humongous that you will be amazed to see them at first sight. Well, I haven’t been to all the biggest temples but surely this temple must be in that top 10 list.
Our modern technology and advancement have led us to build marvelous architecture like Burj Khalifa but thousand years back what technology those people were having to build such massive structure? Be it Egyptian pyramids or Khajuraho temple you will certainly ask this question to yourself.
The humanity should be thankful to such kings who gave the grant to build such temples and structures. These temples are not the just symbol of religion, it is more about art, history, science and moving beyond our daily routine to getting in contact with the God.
Where is it?
Khajuraho is situated in Madhya Pradesh, India. Khajuraho has a domestic airport which has daily flights from Delhi and Varanasi, a railway station is also there in Khajuraho which has good connectivity with the major railway station.
I will caution you to avoid travelling by road because roads are in shambles, especially westerns who have no idea how bad road looks like.
What to do?
All the remaining temples are not at one place they are in the cluster and are here and there spread across the area of almost 4 KM.
In morning, reach by at least 8 AM – the temples opens by 6 AM, you should visit the Western group of temples it will make it easy for you to look into detail when the temperature is not high otherwise the place is hot and humid in afternoons. Only this group of temples are in good shape, so give as much time as possible to these temples.
In noon after having lunch either you can take rest or if you have only one day to visit then your next group of temples will be Jain temples.
There are few more stand alone temples but the architecture is same and there are not any more erotic sculptures in any more temples other than Western and Jain temples.
In evening you can go for light and sound show. In the show, they will narrate the story about the temples and how they were built in English and Hindi as well. So if you have missed some story behind these temples you can catch it up here.
There is few folk dance show also. One is managed by a private group and one is by govt of Madhya Pradesh. Unfortunately when I visited the government folk dance show was closed for some reason but they said it will be continued after some time.
So I opted for the private folk dance show. Let me clear you one thing very clear this show by a private group is not folk dance at all they have just mixed some recent Bollywood numbers with some latest dance moves and they are packaging it with the name of folk dance. This show is a big NO from me, they do not give any glimpse of proper folk dance.L
There are many lakes in Khajuraho and lotus just sprung everywhere as you roam in Khajuraho you will see.
What is the right time to visit?
You should visit it during August to January. As the place is hot and humid it will make difficult to visit temples during summers.
People are helpful but be cautious as it is a tourist place price of everything will be more so bargain as much as possible.
There are few places you can visit nearby one is Raneh fall. The fall is really one of its type I have seen. The rock structure is great actually. If anyone from film industry is reading my article and if you guys are looking for some new place to shoot then I will recommend you this place. The rock formation , according to a local man, happened because of a volcano that was here some millions year ago.
There will be an entry fee of 121/- for a two-wheeler for an Indian and for 4 wheeler charges are different. The fee is higher for foreigners.
Panna National Park is nearby and if you wish to spend some time in the jungle, this can be your choice. It is just around some 20 KM. There is a hotel run by the state government in Jungle so you can definitely stay in it.
If you are totally in awe with these temples and wish to visit other some great temples then you can go for Orchha which around some 4-hour drive from Khajuraho and is worth visiting. There is a palace, Jahangir Mahal , also there in Orchha. I regret that I couldn’t visit.
Where I stayed?
I stayed in International Youth Hostel and the experience was pretty bad so I will not recommend it. Later on, I moved to another hHostel – Zostel. The experience here was quite good. The location is perfect just near the western group of temples and in front of the lake. It is also in the budget you have dormitory and rooms so you can choose according to your budget. The ambience is quite good. Here are some pics worth sharing from this hostel.
